"The eight sabbats are defined by the principal points in the changing relationship of the Sun and the Earth over the year. These points are measured by the easily observable point of the sun's daily emergence on the eastern horizon. Through the spring, as the days grow longer, the sun appears to rise at a point slightly further north each day and then as the days reach their longest, it appears to pause and then start moving south. As the shortest day of the year is reached, it again pauses and starts north. The points of the pauses (the solstices), and half way between them, when the length of the day and night are equal (the equinoxes, formed four easily marked points in the years. They, and the four additional points halfway between them that mark points in the planting and harvest process, became the eight evenly spaced holidays of the ancient world."

The Wheel of the Year is seen to begin at Samhain, which is also known as Hallowe'en or All Hallows Eve. This is the Celtic New Year, when the veil between the worlds of life and death stands open. Samhain is a festival of the dead, when Pagans remember those who have gone before and acknowledge the mystery of death. As Pagans we celebrate death as a part of life.

This is the time of the Goddess of the cold, darkness, and the rebirth of the Divine Child, the reborn Sun God. A time for rebirth and the turning of the earth force tides. The longest night of the year. Cleanse ourselves of all that blocks us from being born anew with the rising solstice sun.

Festival of the Goddess Brigid, patron of poetry and healing. The spring is about to return. This time of strengthening light and regrowth is a time for getting rid of personal, spiritual and psychological baggage. This is a time of the first stirrings of Mother Earth; spring-cleaning, a time of cleansing & purification, preparation for growth and renewal.

As a time of passing and transition, it is powerful - a time of balance - equal day and equal night - so a time of magic, fertility and new life. For many Pagans, the youthful God with his hunting call leads the way in dance and celebration. Others dedicate this time to Eostre the Anglo-Saxon Goddess of fertility.

Pagans celebrate Beltane with maypole dances, symbolising the mystery of the Sacred Marriage of Goddess and God. This is the time of the Lord & Lady - the festival of unashamed sexuality and fertility.

The longest day of the year and the zenith of solar power across the Earth. This is a time of the wild and fertile Green Man - the flourishing Oak God and the manifestation of growth and maturity. It is a time of perfection, the mystical marriage of earth and heaven. And yet it is also a time of sadness, because it marks the point at which the days will start to shorten again. When the sun is at its brightest, it casts the deepest shadows.

The turning point in Mother Earth’s year - a time for harvesting and abundance. The Corn King dies as his body is harvested from the fields so that we may be fed and live, so that we may go into the winter months of darkness rich with his blood and love in our veins. The Dark King, Shepherd of souls, becomes stronger now. This is a time of growth and change and a time for introspection. Its theme is transformation through suffering and sacrifice.

Northern Hemisphere - 21st September
Southern Hemisphere - 21st March

Day and night are equal in length. Draw on our roots in the darkness, yet revel in the kiss of summer breeze and sun. Face the darkness of the autumn and winter ahead and so face mysteries. The Goddess has surprises for us in the wintry months ahead that will surpass our highest hopes. This is a time for wistful reflection on the transience of life - a time of rest after labour. Balance of light and dark, completion of harvest in preparation for Samhain.

DISTURBED...
the fete of emptiness celebrated by the lost souls
is tainting my mind
DEMENTED...
the juvenile contour is smeared..
DELIRIOUS...
bespeaking myself to leave this pettishness
and allow my flesh to take in the gist
of a precious thing...
DAMPENED...
my body is numb..
it acts as if it's slumbering..
DETAINED...
the coming of an abominable soul
pushes us to the pandemoniac snake pit,
seducing me to feel restless...
holding off, holding back
as if the cosmos circles around it
falsifying most that are carried through,
living according to its desires..
DEADENED...
scorning of tasks means death...

i was poisoned. the imbibing of a forbidden drink caused me to be entombed for a moment
still, i was summoned
a sudden prophecy of peril was proclaimed
i wasn't alarmed, not a bit terrified
i cast out the consequence
and unraveled it by slaughtering myself
